Plasma is created when energy is applied to a gas. The atoms of the gas are disrupted and lose one or more electrons becoming ionised. Plasma is the 4th state of matter after solids, liquids and gases. Plasma is created naturally and we see it in phenomenon such as the Northern Lights and Lightening, it is the most prominent state of matter in the universe.

Plasma surface treaters create a stream of ions by feeding compressed air past an electrical discharge as shown in the video.

Treatment can last hours, months and years depending on the material and additives in the manufacturing process, environmental conditions and the level of treatment. Treatment degrades over time, so it is important to conduct trials to measure the degradation and ensure treatment is effective for the process in which it is being used.

We have the capability to carry out surface testing using Mobile Surface Analyser or Surface Energy Inks. We measure changes in the surface energy of components using:

  • Surface Energy Pens/Inks
  • Water Contact Angle Equipment

However, we always recommend our clients carrying out extensive Mechanical tests on components to their own standards to ensure required performance. Mechanical & Environmental Tests, such as Tensile, Peel and Shear testing is usually performed.
