For composite materials such as Glass fibre (GRP), Carbon Fibre (CFRP) there is almost always a requirement for surface preparation to increase bond strength.

Traditional surface preparation techniques include mechanical abrasion by grit or shot blasting or manual abrasion techniques. Chemical Cleaning or wiping is also required to remove mould release agents from the surface.

There are several issues with processes like this.

  • Labour Intensity
  • Risk of applying too much abrasion causing damage on the fibres that lead to porosity in painting applications. (Rejects, rework required)
  • Throughput time
  • Process Variability cause by hand abrasion
