Plasma Surface Treatment
By Enercon Industries
Atmospheric plasma surface treating is used to clean, etch and functionalise surfaces to improve bonding of adhesives, inks, potting compounds, paints, coatings and more.
Non-porous and hydrophobic surfaces have low surface energy with few available bonding sites due to low levels of charged ions on the surface. Additionally, any type of surface contamination including additives and release agents also reduce adhesion.
Low surface energy results in the bonds between the molecules of the applied substance being stronger than those between the applied substance and the substrate – so the applied liquid forms a droplet that doesn’t spread over the surface of the substrate.
Plasma surface treatment increases the surface energy of the substrate so that the applied substance can spread increasing its ability to coat or bond better.
It offers a highly targetable and precise form of surface treatment that integrates into manufacturing operations to provide assembly, printing and decorating advantages by increasing adhesion strength and product quality – increasing output and reducing reject rate.
Plasma surface treatment is highly targetable and precise to effectively treat extruded, pultruded, moulded and formed materials. Treatment is ideal for PE, PP, PET, nylon, vinyl, polystyrene, polycarbonate, PVC and all other types of thermoformed and thermoset plastics. Plasma surface treaters can also be used on metals and foils to clean and promote adhesion.
